Everton fans have had their say on 10 prospective transfer recruits following a poll in the ECHO's 'Sign or Swerve' article. The results reveal a clear favourite and some surprising splits.
Hayden Hackney Tops the Poll
Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney emerged as the overwhelming favourite, with 94% of respondents voting to sign him. The 23-year-old Championship Player of the Season has one year left on his contract and is reportedly keen on a move to Merseyside. ECHO reporter Christopher Beesley noted: "He could have been the early signing through the door this summer to restore the feel-good factor at Hill Dickinson Stadium."
Jarrod Bowen and Guela Doue Also Popular
West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen and Strasbourg right-back Guela Doue both received 81% approval. Bowen, a proven Premier League performer, was described by Beesley as "a good egg in the dressing room" who was given his big break by David Moyes. Doue, who provided seven assists last season, is seen as a dream signing for Everton's problem right-back position, though his £40million price tag may be prohibitive.
Liam Delap Divides Opinion
Chelsea striker Liam Delap proved the most divisive target, with 45% in favour and 55% against. Beesley called him "the football version of Marmite among Evertonians." Delap struggled at Chelsea after a promising spell at Ipswich Town, and his future remains uncertain.
Harry Wilson Agrees Leeds Deal
Fulham winger Harry Wilson, despite 60% of fans voting to sign him, has since agreed a four-year deal with Leeds United. Beesley had recommended swerving the Wales international, citing a lack of pace.
Other Targets Rejected
Several players were firmly rejected by fans: Karl Etta Eyong (17% sign), Edon Zhegrova (19%), Raoul Bellanova (26%), and Gabriel Jesus (29%). Beesley had recommended swerving all four, citing poor statistics, recent form, or injury concerns.
Conclusion
The poll shows strong fan backing for midfield and right-back reinforcements, with Hackney, Bowen, and Doue as clear priorities. The club's transfer strategy will be closely watched as the summer window progresses.
