Eddie Howe could consider his future at Newcastle United if he feels he hasn't been supported in the transfer market, according to former Newcastle star Chris Waddle. The Magpies are struggling to add high-calibre players this summer after bids for Swiss star Johan Manzambi and Spain forward Victor Munoz were rejected.
Inexperienced signings raise concerns
Newcastle have added three players to their squad, but all three are inexperienced. Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has yet to play a top-flight game, 18-year-old Sean Steur has only 25 senior appearances for Ajax, and Bazoumana Toure, though a World Cup participant for Ivory Coast, is still just 20. This has left supporters worried about squad strength, especially after losing senior stars Kieran Trippier, Aaron Ramsdale, John Ruddy, Sandro Tonali, Emil Krafth, and Anthony Gordon since the end of the season.
Howe's optimism vs. reality
Howe is understood to remain optimistic that the club will add quality before the season starts, but he is reliant on sporting director Ross Wilson and CEO David Hopkinson to secure the necessary deals. Chris Waddle believes Howe will feel let down by the lack of senior signings so far.
"I think eventually, Eddie Howe will reflect on the team he built that reached the Champions League and won the League Cup," Waddle told OLBG. "He likely thought they would build on that by bringing in more experienced players who could do the job. But last year was a poor season – let's be honest, very poor – and his hands are tied. He's bringing in players, and while they'll say, 'Look, there's £100 million we've spent or whatever,' these are the wrong players, and we don't know what we're going to get from them."
Waddle urges patience
Waddle says supporters must be realistic about Newcastle's ambitions and show patience toward Howe despite the pressure. "Are these players Premier League quality? It's a concern that he's letting go of three players who are proven at that level," he added. "I can't really blame Eddie Howe if he's forced to bring in players on a shoestring budget while being told he can't afford this or that. He's bringing in what he can and it's a gamble."
Waddle predicted that if the new signings hit the ground running, Newcastle will be fine, but if not, it could be a difficult season. He added, "I don't think the fans will turn on the manager, though, I think they'll turn on the ownership. Ultimately, managers are always under pressure because people expect more from the team."
Uncertain season ahead
Waddle concluded, "I don't know if he can get as much out of this squad he's got with these three new ones coming in. We'll see how they go. It's a season ahead with a question mark when I look at Newcastle."
