State pensioners born before a specific date will automatically receive £100 more in their Winter Fuel Payments, the DWP has confirmed. Those aged over 80, born before September 28, 1946, will get a £300 payment instead of the standard £200.
Payment amounts depend on birth date
The amount pensioners receive depends on their birth year, with the current system applying to this winter, from October until January next year. The DWP has confirmed that those of state pension age but under 80, born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, will receive £200, while those over 80 will get £300.
The payment criteria have changed twice in two years. Initially, the payment was means-tested and tied to Pension Credit eligibility, available only to those on a very low income of around £11,000, which proved highly controversial. For the past winter, the system changed again, making the payment universal for all state pensioners, with only those earning £35,000 or more having to give it back.
Qualifying week and payment details
The Government states: "You’ll get a letter in October or November telling you how much Winter Fuel Payment you’ll get, if you’re eligible. If you do not get a letter but think you’re eligible, check if you need to make a claim." The amount for 2026 is based on birth date and circumstances during the 'qualifying week' between September 21 and 27, 2026.
Qualifying pensioners will receive either £200 if born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, or £300 if born before September 28, 1946. The letter will also explain which bank account the money will be paid into, usually the same as that used for Pension Credit or other benefits.
Automatic payments and claims
Age UK said: "If you or your partner claims Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the payment should go to the main claimant of the benefit automatically. If you've never received a winter fuel payment before, or if you claim Universal Credit, you might need to make a claim."
If you receive Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit, you must make a claim. Payments should arrive between mid-November and Christmas. Age UK advises calling the winter fuel payment helpline on 0800 731 0160 for enquiries or if payment is not received.
