Close to a million UK households could secure a significant financial uplift from the Department for Work and Pensions before 2026, new figures have disclosed.
Who is Eligible for the £4,300 Income Boost?
According to the DWP, an estimated 910,000 households are currently failing to claim Pension Credit despite being entitled to it. This benefit provides an average annual top-up of around £4,300. The core element, known as Guarantee Credit, ensures a minimum weekly income of £227.10 for single people and £346.60 for couples.
You may still qualify even if your income exceeds these thresholds if you have severe disabilities, are a carer, or have specific housing costs. Additional sums are available for those with caring responsibilities, severe disabilities, or who are responsible for children.
Government Push to Increase Uptake
In a bid to boost claims, the Government has partnered with Age UK on a targeted campaign. Letters are being sent to 2,000 pensioners across England who have been identified as likely eligible but are not currently receiving the support.
Pensions Minister Torsten Bell stated: "We're committed to supporting harder-up pensioners however we can. Pension Credit is a simple way to give those who need it the most some extra support with bills or a free TV licence."
He urged people to check their eligibility, adding: "I'd urge anyone who thinks they, or anyone they know, might be able to claim Pension Credit, to take a few minutes out of their day to check and apply. This country's pensioners deserve every penny they are entitled to."
How to Claim and Additional Perks
Applications for Pension Credit can be made up to four months before reaching State Pension age, which is currently 66. Claims can be submitted:
- Online via the GOV.UK website.
- By phone on 0800 99 1234.
- Using a paper application form.
A successful claim acts as a gateway to a host of other valuable benefits, including:
- A free TV licence for those aged 75 or over.
- Help with rent (Housing Benefit), council tax, and NHS dental treatment.
- Support with costs for glasses and hospital transport.
- Eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payments.
- Help with mortgage interest and certain service charges.
The DWP is encouraging all pensioners, or their families, to check their eligibility for this substantial financial support which remains underclaimed.
