Warning to UK Shoppers: Tomato Prices May Rise Due to Energy Costs
Warning: UK Tomato Prices May Rise Due to Energy Costs

Italian tomato brand Mutti has warned that UK supermarket tomato prices could rise if oil costs remain elevated during the critical summer harvest period. Energy expenses are currently about 50% above anticipated levels due to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which continues to impact oil and gas costs.

Energy Costs Threaten Tomato Harvest

Francesco Mutti, chief executive of the Italian producer of tinned tomatoes, purées and sauces, said the company has refrained from raising prices so far but cautioned that the July to September window would be decisive in determining future action. According to The Grocery Gazette, the firm consumes approximately three-quarters of its annual energy expenditure during Europe's peak tomato season, when tomatoes are gathered and handled intensively for global distribution.

Potential Price Increases After Harvest

Mutti stated the company would reassess its stance following the harvest's completion, with any possible price increases occurring after the season concludes. He added: "There, depending on the level, we will have to take the decision about what our position will be on the market." In the UK, tins of Mutti Polpa chopped tomatoes retail for approximately £1.60, competing directly with Napolina for the top non-supermarket tomato brand.

Impact on Fresh Tomatoes

Regarding fresh tomatoes, supermarket customers have already noticed effects. British producers who rely on glasshouses have been hit by both increased fertiliser costs and rocketing energy bills. According to the British Tomato Growers Association, some growers faced electricity standing charges climbing by as much as 80% from April. Shoppers have also seen empty shelves where tomatoes and other essential items like peppers and cucumbers would normally be stocked.
