Top 5 US States with Highest Household Bills as Inflation Hits 3-Year High
Top 5 US States with Highest Household Bills

Consumers across the United States are facing rising monthly household bills as inflation reached its highest point in three years in April. A new study from energy rate comparison site UtilityRates.com reveals that California residents are bearing the highest monthly bills in the nation across 12 categories, including mortgage, gas for utilities, electricity, water, internet, and waste.

Most Expensive States for Household Bills

The top five most expensive states, according to the study, are California ($4,193 per month), New Jersey ($4,036), Hawaii ($4,028), Massachusetts ($3,927), and New York ($3,779). These figures highlight the significant financial burden on households in these regions.

"Household bills are one of the biggest pressures on monthly budgets," said Karl Trollinger, CEO of UtilityRates.com, in a statement. "What stands out in these findings is that these costs are rarely driven by one single bill. Instead, it is the combined weight of housing costs, utilities, insurance, internet, and transport expenses that creates the biggest pressure."

Regional Disparities

The study reveals stark differences in household bills based on location. Average monthly household bills in California are more than double those in West Virginia, the cheapest state. The five most affordable states for household bills are West Virginia ($1,984), Wyoming ($2,356), Mississippi ($2,407), Indiana ($2,415), and Arkansas ($2,422).

Rising Utility and Gas Costs

Utility bills, which form part of household bills, rose 7 percent from 2024 to 2025, according to consumer research firm JD Power. Meanwhile, gas prices have surged more than 50 percent following the United States' attack on Iran in late February, driven by political tensions and slowed oil shipping. For the first time in four years, gas prices in every state averaged at least $4, as reported by motor club AAA.com.

Grocery prices continue to climb, with beef and tomatoes rising 14.8 percent and 15 percent, respectively, in April. These increases add to the financial strain on consumers.

Political Impact

As the cost of living rises, voter confidence in President Donald Trump has plummeted. His approval rating fell to a record low of 29 percent on Thursday, according to a Fox News poll. A majority of voters across party lines disapprove of Trump's handling of inflation: 51 percent of Republicans, 85 percent of independents, and 96 percent of Democrats.

The Trump administration has attempted to curb inflation and make life more affordable by encouraging the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, removing refrigerant emissions regulations to reduce grocery costs, and banning Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes. Despite these measures, household bills remain a significant burden for many Americans.
