Rob Key Explains Zak Crawley Axe and Ollie Robinson's England Recall
Rob Key on Crawley Axe and Robinson Recall

Rob Key has sent a message to axed batsman Zak Crawley, insisting his Test career can still be resurrected, while explaining the recall of Ollie Robinson for the first Test against New Zealand. England have also selected Durham's Emilio Gay and rising talent James Rew in a reshaped 15-man squad for the Lord's Test starting on 4 June, signalling the start of a rebuild after the Ashes.

Zak Crawley Dropped After Poor Form

Zak Crawley was not surprised when his phone rang this week and Rob Key's name appeared on the screen. An average of 27.30 across 10 innings for Kent in the County Championship was the final nail in the coffin after a dismal Ashes series. Key said: 'I think he knew it was coming.' Emilio Gay takes over as Ben Duckett's opening partner. 'I'd never like to think it's the end of the road for anyone,' Key added. 'He can go back out of the spotlight and develop his game. Hopefully it'll be the making of him.'

Ollie Robinson Recalled After Fallout

Robinson's recall is perhaps the most eye-catching decision. The 32-year-old fell out with the England leadership during the 2024 India tour due to fitness issues and a podcast controversy. But his form for Sussex this season — 17 wickets at 26.17 and a century — prompted calls for his return. Key said: 'When he's fit and bowling at 82-83 mph, he is world class. He looks back up to full fitness. We've spoken to him a lot. Ollie Robinson, fit and at his best, is one of the best bowlers in the world.'

New Faces and a Fresh Bowling Attack

Uncapped fast bowler Sonny Baker and wicketkeeper-batter James Rew were also included, while Ollie Pope was left out. Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir retains support despite being sidelined during the Ashes, and will compete with Rehan Ahmed. With Mark Wood and Brydon Carse injured, and Jofra Archer unavailable, England have retained Ashes bowlers Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue alongside Robinson, Baker and Matt Fisher. Captain Ben Stokes opened the bowling for Durham against Worcestershire, hinting at a new role. Key said: 'I think there's a chance Ben could take the new ball.'

Key was cautious not to promise too much, too soon. 'This is an evolving attack. With another 20 Test matches behind it, it's going to be seriously exciting.'
