Reform UK has stated it will "monitor the verdict closely" after one of its councillors, Glenn Gibbins, was charged over a social media comment. Northumbria Police confirmed the charge earlier today.
The 66-year-old, elected to represent Sunderland's Hylton Castle ward for Reform UK in May's local elections, faces a charge under the Communications Act 2003 for posting a grossly offensive comment. The charge relates to a 2024 post referencing the Nigerian community.
Investigation and court appearance
Northumbria Police investigated the comment after receiving a report in May this year. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently authorised the charge. Gibbins, who lives in the Sunderland area, is due to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates' Court next month.
Party response and police appeal
A Reform UK spokesman said: "The party is aware of the situation involving Cllr Gibbins. We will monitor the verdict closely." Northumbria Police urged people not to speculate about the case online or in the community to avoid prejudicing court proceedings.
