King Charles and Queen Camilla are celebrating a remarkable treble victory at the races after three of their horses romped home as winners on Friday. The impressive feat was achieved across two race meetings: two wins at York and one at Newbury, coinciding with Charles's attendance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show alongside the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
Portcullis Shines at York
The first of the royal winners was Portcullis, who triumphed in the Darley EBF "Confined" Novice Stakes at York. Ridden by William Buick, the John and Thady Gosden-trained son of Frankel had already created a stir when winning on debut at Newmarket, and he showcased his potential once again on the Knavesmire. Sent off as the even-money favourite, Portcullis's task was made easier when his chief market rival, Weheedd, was pulled up early in the mile race. Although the victory was not as comprehensive as his Newmarket bow, the future looks bright for this royal colt.
Warrant Holder Delivers
The second winner for the King and Queen was Warrant Holder, who carried their colours to victory in the Support Macmillan Charity Raceday on 13 June Handicap at York. The 11-4 favourite enjoyed a good run along the rail before taking the lead in the final furlong, holding off Thunder Run to win by a length. Like Portcullis, Warrant Holder is also a son of Frankel and had been consistent in his three-year-old career. Gelded over the winter and fitted with a tongue-tie for the first time, he produced a most professional performance.
Point Of Law Makes It a Treble
The third winner completed the treble for both the Gosden training team and the royal couple. Point Of Law, the 4-7 favourite, went one better than his debut second at Yarmouth to win the Coolmore City Of Troy EBF Maiden Stakes at Newbury. Notably, the same training team won this race in 2019 with subsequent St Leger hero Logician, adding to the significance of the victory.
The triple success marks a memorable day for the King and Queen, who are known for their passion for horse racing and breeding. The victories at York and Newbury demonstrate the quality of their horses and the skill of their training team. As the royal couple continue to enjoy the Royal Windsor Horse Show, these wins add a festive note to the proceedings.
