Five Major UK Firms Enter Administration Amid Rising Business Failures
With less than three months into 2026, the United Kingdom has witnessed a significant increase in the number of firms entering administration or closing permanently. This troubling trend has impacted a diverse range of sectors, including fashion brands, building companies, food distributors, and energy providers, putting countless jobs at risk across the nation.
Alarming Surge in Administration Notices
According to official notices published in The Gazette, the UK's public register, a staggering 40 companies entered administration over the past fortnight alone. Government figures reveal that in January 2026, the number of administrations was 41% higher than in December 2025 and 14% greater compared to January 2025, highlighting a sharp and concerning upward trajectory in business failures.
In recent weeks, five well-known companies have succumbed to financial pressures, entering administration and disrupting their operations. These include a sporting goods retailer, an energy firm, a furniture chain, a food distributor, and a construction company, each with a distinct history and customer base.
King Foods: A Food Distributor Collapses
Established in 1994, King Foods has entered administration, resulting in over 40 employees being made redundant. The Aberdeen-based company specialised in supplying frozen foods, fresh fish products, dry goods, and fresh and frozen meat to hotel and retail catering businesses across north-east Scotland. It also operated its own stores in Edinburgh and Stirling.
The company was compelled to make this difficult decision after facing intense pressure from escalating operational expenses and growing competition within the food distribution industry, ultimately rendering its business model unsustainable.
Quicks Archery: Historic Supplier Halts Operations
Founded by David George Quick in 1949, Quicks Archery has been a longstanding supplier of archery equipment, components, kits, books, accessories, and gifts. The firm has now entered administration, with all website orders postponed indefinitely.
A notice in The London Gazette confirmed that the Holmfirth-based business appointed Jonathan Paul Philmore of Philmore & Co Ltd as administrator on March 11. The company's official website displays a message stating, "Due to a restructure of the business, all orders placed via the website will be delayed. Thanks for your patience and understanding."
Amber Energy Solutions LTD: Energy Firm Falls
Amber Energy Solutions LTD has gone into administration, leaving 170 staff members seeking new employment. The UK energy firm appointed administrators, as reported by The Gazette on March 9.
This mid-size company was previously hailed as the UK's "number one independent third party intermediary (TPI) in the energy sector" and was recognised as one of the top 101 most innovative energy efficiency companies in the UK in 2021, according to the Cold Chain Federation. Despite this acclaim, it could not withstand the current economic challenges.
Pagazzi Lighting: Family Business Closes Shops
Pagazzi Lighting, well-known throughout Scotland and Northern England, was established nearly fifty years ago and became a trusted specialist for decorative lighting, mirrors, and home accessories. However, this well-liked family furniture business has gone into administration, resulting in the closure of 11 shops and leaving numerous employees jobless.
Despite operating successfully for 45 years, the firm's past achievements were insufficient to protect it from a "sustained period of poor trading" and escalating financial strains, forcing its collapse.
M&J Builders: Construction Company Enters Administration
M&J Builders, located in Oldham, has appointed Craig Johns and Jason Mark Elliott of Cowgills Limited, Bolton, as administrators, according to The Gazette. The builders provided a range of services, including construction work, strip and demolition, ground works, diamond drilling, concrete cutting, and roofing.
This follows another construction company, Kilmarnock-based Alastair Dick Tarmac Ltd, also entering administration after over a decade in operation, indicating broader struggles within the construction sector amid economic headwinds.
