Ella Toone has expressed the England squad's devastation over captain Leah Williamson's absence from the upcoming Women's World Cup due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Williamson sustained the injury during Arsenal's match against Manchester United on Wednesday, ruling her out of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
Speaking on Soccer AM, the Manchester United forward said: 'We're all gutted for her and can't wait for her to be back and we're all with her. Like you said she's our captain, our leader and she was a massive part of our Euros winning team, so we'll obviously go out there and hopefully make her proud.'
Williamson, who captained England to victory in the women's Euros last year, has been capped 41 times since her debut in 2018. She wrote on Instagram: 'Unfortunately the World Cup and Champions League dream is over for me... it's the day-to-day of what I'm about to go through that is the most draining of my thoughts.'
The Women's World Cup is scheduled to take place between July 20 and August 20. Toone and her teammates are determined to honour Williamson's leadership by performing strongly in the tournament.
