Cost-of-living crisis drives Brits to micro-treats over big purchases

Brits are increasingly turning to small indulgences like ice lollies to cope as the cost-of-living squeeze tightens its grip. New research reveals that 35% of people feel too financially stretched to take a proper break or unwind during the day, despite 79% agreeing that moments of fun are essential for mental health.

When asked what lifts their spirits most, affordable pleasures such as a small treat (21%) and time outdoors (21%) topped the list, according to a poll by Rowntree's. Experiences, self-care and personal rewards remain valued, but many Britons are prioritising financial caution over extravagance.

Over half (54%) of Brits reported worries about living costs, and 27% are postponing major expenditures like vehicles or home improvements. Instead, three-quarters are opting for swift, budget-friendly mood-boosters to brighten their day, which Rowntree's is capitalising on with the launch of two new ice-lolly varieties just in time for spring.

The new offerings include Rowntree's Fruit Explosion, a dual-flavoured sorbet lolly with a fruit sauce core, available in apple and cherry or kiwi, mango and passion fruit. Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles Berries reimagines the classic sweet as a cooling lolly. A Rowntree's spokesperson said: "It's still so important to take a moment for yourself, even if it's just something small. This is about embracing little pauses in the day – a simple way to enjoy a bit of fun and bring a smile, no matter how busy life gets."
