Condom Prices Could Soar 30% as Iran War Disrupts Global Supply Chains

The world's top condom producer, Malaysia's Karex Bhd, has announced plans to increase prices by 20% to 30%, with potential for further rises if supply chain disruptions from the US war on Iran persist. CEO Goh Miah Kiat revealed in a Reuters interview that the company, which manufactures over 5 billion condoms annually, is facing mounting costs and logistical challenges.

Supply Chain Strains and Rising Demand

Karex, a key supplier to major brands such as Durex and Trojan, as well as the UK's NHS and United Nations aid programmes, is experiencing a surge in condom demand. This comes as shipping delays and increased freight costs have depleted customer stockpiles. Goh stated, 'The situation is definitely very fragile, prices are expensive ... We have no choice but to transfer the costs right now to the customers.'

Since the conflict began in late February, Karex has seen costs escalate for raw materials including synthetic rubber, nitrile, packaging materials, and lubricants like aluminium foils and silicone oil. The war has strained energy and petrochemical flows from the Middle East, creating bottlenecks similar to those affecting medical glove manufacturers.

Logistical Delays and Global Impact

Shipments to Europe and the United States now take nearly two months, compared to one month previously, exacerbating shortages. Goh noted, 'We're seeing a lot more condoms actually sitting on vessels that have not arrived at their destination but are highly required,' highlighting that developing countries are particularly affected due to delayed deliveries.

Demand for condoms has risen approximately 30% this year, partly due to reduced foreign aid spending, such as cuts by the US Agency for International Development. Despite having enough supplies for the next few months, Karex is boosting output to address the growing need as global stockpiles dwindle.

Broader Economic Implications

This price hike reflects broader economic shocks from the Iran war, impacting global markets and healthcare systems. Consumers and health programmes worldwide may face higher costs, underscoring the interconnected nature of modern supply chains.
