Chelsy Davy has revealed that motherhood took her by surprise, as the former girlfriend of Prince Harry admitted she never expected children to be part of her future. The 40-year-old jewellery entrepreneur, who dated the Duke of Sussex on and off for seven years from 2004, recently gave birth to her third child, son Finn, with husband Sam Cutmore-Scott.
Motherhood: An Unexpected Journey
In a rare interview with parenting platform Luminary Mothers, Chelsy said: 'It wasn't something I spent my teenage years or my twenties thinking was likely to be part of my future. My parents are delighted; I think they'd resigned themselves to never having grandkids!'
After working as a lawyer in the City, Chelsy made a career change and launched her African jewellery brand, Aya, in 2016. Marking a decade of her label, she spoke about balancing entrepreneurship with motherhood, describing them as 'complementary'. She finds motivation in the fact that 'my kids will, at some point, form a view on what I've built', though she admitted that one challenge is 'finding time to be creative'.
Life Before Motherhood
Commonly seen leaving London nightclubs in the early hours with Prince Harry during his 20s, Chelsy was considered a 'wild child'. The pair were well-suited, both being gregarious and party-loving. However, Chelsy was deemed unsuitable as a royal bride, and they split for good in 2011.
In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry noted that Chelsy was 'different' from other women he dated because she 'seemed immune to that common affliction sometimes called throne syndrome'. Chelsy grew up in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, as the daughter of a model and a wealthy businessman. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Cape Town and a law degree from the University of Leeds.
Relationship with Prince Harry
Chelsy reportedly first met Harry in England while at school, and they got together in 2004 during his gap year in Zimbabwe. Their relationship saw her by his side for events like the Diana memorial concert in 2007 and introductions to the Queen. She was part of the 'Glosse Posse', an exclusive group of friends. However, the pressures of conflicting careers and Harry's service in Afghanistan took a toll. They split in 2010, with Chelsy declaring that life as a royal girlfriend was 'not for me'. She attended Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding in 2011 and Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018.
Marriage and Family Life
Chelsy's husband, Sam Cutmore-Scott, is the brother of Hollywood actor Jack Cutmore-Scott. The couple were first pictured together on a family holiday in Mauritius over Christmas 2019 and married there in a relaxed beach wedding in 2022. They now have three children: son Leo, four; daughter Chloe, two; and newborn son Finn. Chelsy recently marked their fourth wedding anniversary on Instagram with rare family photos, captioning: 'Four years, three kids, two very tired people. Happy anniversary Sam.'
