Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh has shared his straightforward approach to lawn care, emphasising a key task for June to promote healthy grass. Writing in Country Life magazine, the broadcaster and author advocates for feeding lawns with fish, blood and bone fertiliser in April and again in June.
Titchmarsh, who presents 'Love Your Garden', explained that he uses a daisy grubber to remove large rosettes of plantain or dandelion. He avoids chemical weed killers, opting for an organic method that he says attracts more wildlife to his garden.
The fertiliser replenishes lost nutrients and encourages vigorous grass growth. For established lawns, experts recommend applying it uniformly at 70g per square metre using a spreader, followed by gentle watering.
Titchmarsh noted that he stopped using chemical lawn treatments years ago, and now enjoys watching blackbirds extract worms from his chemical-free lawn. Despite his organic approach, he still values the aesthetic of a striped lawn, achieved with a rotary mower fitted with a rear roller.
