The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that Winter Fuel Payments worth up to £300 will start landing in bank accounts from the middle of November 2026. The annual payment is designed to help older people with heating costs during the colder months.
Payment dates and automatic distribution
The DWP has published a new Easy Read guide setting out eligibility rules, payment amounts and when pensioners can expect to receive the money. Payments will be made from mid-November 2026 onwards, with most eligible households receiving the financial support automatically.
Pensioners should also receive a letter by the end of November confirming how much they will receive and how the money will be paid. Payments will be issued to the same bank account used for their State Pension or other benefits.
Who qualifies for Winter Fuel Payment?
People living in England or Wales may qualify for a payment if they were born on or before June 27, 1960, and lived in either country during the qualifying week, which ran from September 21 to 27, 2026.
The payment is worth either £200 or £300 per household, depending on age and household circumstances. The higher amount is available to people aged 80 or over.
Most eligible pensioners do not need to make a claim as the DWP will issue their payment automatically. However, some people may need to make a claim, including those who have deferred their State Pension and do not receive another DWP benefit. The department may also contact individuals directly if they need to make a claim.
Further information about eligibility and payments is available on GOV.UK.
Income rules and recovery process
The DWP also confirmed that pensioners with annual incomes above £35,000 will have their Winter Fuel Payment recovered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The recovery process takes place through the tax system rather than preventing eligible pensioners from receiving their initial payment.
HMRC assesses each person's income separately, meaning the £35,000 threshold applies to individuals rather than the combined income of a household. Pensioners can find further information about the recovery process on GOV.UK.
Payments for pensioners in Scotland
Winter Fuel Payment is only available to eligible people living in England and Wales. Pensioners in Scotland may instead qualify for Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, which is administered by Social Security Scotland.
The Scottish payment provides financial support towards heating costs during winter and replaces the DWP's Winter Fuel Payment north of the border. Eligibility details and further information are available on MYGOV.SCOT.
