Waitrose shoppers can save £3 a day with free coffee perk

Waitrose shoppers can save up to £3 a day by claiming a free hot drink through the supermarket's loyalty scheme, with no purchase required. The perk is available to members of the free My Waitrose scheme, who can walk into a participating branch, scan their card at a self-service drinks machine and select a complimentary drink.

No minimum spend required

Unlike some supermarket loyalty rewards, the offer does not require a minimum purchase or a receipt scan. The tip was shared by money-saving expert Jordon Cox, known online as Coupon Kid UK. He said: “Waitrose offer a perk getting a free hot drink inside their stores if you have a My Waitrose loyalty card. But here's the kicker – there's no minimum spend required. You can literally go in there to grab a hot drink and then leave paying nothing.”

Shoppers must bring their own reusable cup, as Waitrose does not provide disposable cups for the offer. Jordon added: “Find a coffee machine in store, scan your loyalty card on the scanner, select a drink, and it's yours. You can do this once a day, but you do need to bring in a reusable cup, as they don't supply any paper cups.”

Terms and availability

Waitrose's current terms confirm members can claim one complimentary hot drink per day from the retailer's branded self-service machines. Qualifying drinks include Americano, cappuccino, latte, flat white, double espresso and tea.

The freebie cannot be redeemed at a Waitrose café or staffed serving area, and is limited to participating stores. It is unavailable online, at petrol stations, Shell-operated branches or Welcome Break sites. My Waitrose membership is free, though members must be aged 18 or over and live in the UK or Channel Islands.

Jordon estimated that using the perk once a week instead of paying £3 to £4 at a high-street coffee chain could save more than £100 a year. His post drew comments from shoppers, with one asking: “You have to scan a receipt, or has that changed?” Jordon replied: “No receipt needed! Just your loyalty card.” Another wrote: “Great tip.” Jordon reminded shoppers: “They'd obviously like you to spend while you're in there – but you don't have to.”
