Labubu Toy Craze Sparks Urgent UK Safety Alert: Parents Warned Over 'Dangerous' Craze
Urgent UK Safety Alert Over Dangerous Labubu Toys

A major product safety alert has been issued across the United Kingdom following the seizure of hundreds of popular children's toys deemed dangerously unsafe for young children.

Trading Standards officers have raised the alarm after confiscating more than 230 units of the 'Labubu' toy sets, a collectible craze sweeping the nation. The products failed critical safety tests, revealing a series of severe hazards that could put children at immediate risk.

Critical Safety Failures Uncovered

The investigation, led by The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI), uncovered multiple violations of UK safety regulations. The primary concerns identified include:

  • Small Detachable Parts: Easily breakable components pose a serious choking hazard for young children.
  • Inadequate Safety Warnings: A lack of clear age restrictions and necessary hazard information on packaging.
  • Non-Compliant Packaging: Failure to meet the stringent safety standards required for toys sold in the UK market.

Industry-Wide Alert Issued

CTSI Lead Officer, Katherine Hart, emphasised the gravity of the situation: "This isn't an isolated incident. We are witnessing a flood of non-compliant and unsafe toys entering the country. We are urging all parents, guardians, and retailers to be exceptionally vigilant."

The warning extends beyond a single batch, indicating a potential widespread issue with various shipments of these toys. The seized products were discovered at a major UK freight forwarder, suggesting they were destined for store shelves and online marketplaces nationwide.

What Parents Need to Do

If you have already purchased a Labubu toy set, Trading Standards advises you to:

  1. Check the product immediately for any small, loose, or easily breakable parts.
  2. Look for clear CE or UKCA markings and traceable supplier information on the packaging.
  3. Stop using the toy immediately if you have any doubts about its safety or construction.
  4. Report any concerning products directly to the Citizens Advice consumer service.

This urgent warning serves as a critical reminder for the upcoming gifting seasons. Parents are encouraged to buy only from reputable retailers and to always scrutinise toys for necessary safety certifications before purchase.
