If your diary is packed with social events this summer, you are fortunate. But what if your wardrobe does not meet the occasion? Dressing for weddings can be especially tricky. There is so much to factor in: location, weather, and the possibility of accidentally matching with another guest. I cannot count how many times I have been asked for advice: is this dress too showy, or that trouser suit not smart enough? Will I clash with the bridal party or look as though I have not tried hard enough?
City Cool
City weddings offer several options, but for a failsafe glamorous look, a tailored suit is a great bet. Just ensure you wear a colour that is not black, grey, or white for obvious reasons. Rather than opt for everyday trousers, why not switch things up with a pair of culottes from John Lewis? They are the perfect transitional style for warmer weather and a piece you can re-wear separately or together throughout the year. If you prefer dresses, look for a style that works with a blazer thrown over for when the evening draws in, such as this maxi dress from Reiss. Longer hemlines are fine, but keep it chic and sharp rather than boho. You are much less likely to be walking on grass or gravel in the city, so you can go to town with heels too.
Countryside Boho
Countryside weddings demand a certain style. Think floaty maxi dresses, soft flowing fabrics, and boho puff sleeves. A pretty floral print will always work. Aspiga’s statement maxi will stand out in rural settings and look great paired either with raffia accessories or cowboy boots. If you are on a budget, Primark has the perfect co-ord featuring a broderie puff sleeve top and matching A-line skirt. What is great is they work together or separately, so you can mix and match all summer long.
Beach Break
If you are lucky enough to be heading off to the tropics for a beachside wedding, I have the perfect frocks for you. Pink City Prints offers an array of beautiful block-prints all on organic cotton, so you will be cool and comfortable. This blue patchwork design is one of my favourites and comes in an easy-to-wear shape that is unbelievably flattering. Think you could never find a wedding guest dress in a supermarket? Think again. This midi dress from F&F at Tesco is perfect for those who need to cover bra straps and wear flat shoes. Its relaxed silhouette will work for every body shape as it skims over curves. Dress it up with stylish accessories like statement gold earrings and a beautiful bracelet. If you are worried about your arms, you can always throw a lightweight jacket over your shoulders.
Destination Wedding
So many weddings now take place abroad where the weather is guaranteed, but do not fall into the trap of thinking you only need to pack your favourite holiday dress. If it works in a beach bar and the wedding is not on the beach, it will not work in a pretty Tuscan village or a five-star hotel in Valencia. The key is to look for cotton and linen designs in smart silhouettes. Mint Velvet’s linen blend dress in chocolate brown will look great against sun-kissed skin. If you prefer something brighter, head to Anthropologie, where you will find a burst of beautiful styles that really tick the dressed-up but still-cool box.
Smart Set
Black tie demands drama, not the kind that will upstage the bride, but something exciting. Leave the sparkles in the wardrobe and opt for grown-up glamour in the form of luxurious silks and satins. Just remember to avoid pastel tones to stay sufficiently distinct from the bridal party. Hobbs has continued their black tie collection this season, and this navy satin dress is the epitome of class. A floor-sweeping maxi so you will not have to worry about baring your ankles, it features flattering bust ruching and a panel to define your waist. For £100, you can pick up this Tabitha Simmons for Next scarf detail column dress, which will also ensure you make a stunning entrance.
