UK households urged to pour one thing down drains before end of October

UK households are being advised to check and clean their outside drains before the end of October, using a simple homemade mixture of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, to prevent blockages and potential flooding as wetter winter weather approaches.

Why October is a critical time for drains

The UK experiences plenty of wet weather and storms at this time of year, which can cause problems for homes and gardens. Heavy rain can leave water building up around properties if it is unable to drain away properly, increasing the risk of standing water and flooding.

The problem can become particularly noticeable towards the end of October and the start of November when falling leaves, mud and other garden debris can collect around outside drains. Leaves can block the path of rainwater, while problems can also develop further down pipes as waste builds up over time.

How to make the homemade drain cleaner

Plumbing experts at Plumbcare recommend using vinegar alongside bicarbonate of soda as one homemade method for cleaning drains. The company says regularly checking outside drains can help people spot a blockage before it develops into a bigger problem which may require a plumber.

Vinegar can be combined with bicarbonate of soda and salt to create a simple homemade drain cleaner. When vinegar and bicarbonate of soda come into contact, the mixture begins to bubble and fizz. Plumbcare recommends mixing two parts bicarbonate of soda with one part salt before pouring it down the drain.

Households should then warm four parts vinegar and pour this on top of the mixture. Plumbcare says: “It will bubble and fizz. Let it work for 15 minutes and then flush through with hot water.”

Prevention and maintenance tips

The plumbing company also recommends regularly keeping an eye on outside drains to make sure debris is not blocking them and that water levels look normal. It says a simple bicarbonate of soda and vinegar mixture could be used if people spot a problem before it becomes serious enough to require a plumber.

Prevention is also important, particularly at this time of year. Leaves and garden debris should be kept away from outside drains, while food waste and fats should not be washed down kitchen sinks. Fat can cause particular problems because it can collect inside pipes and contribute to blockages.

Plumbcare also recommends using strainers to stop food waste from disappearing down sinks and catching hair before it is washed down bathroom plugholes. Outside, households can regularly check drains and clear away leaves and other visible debris that could stop water flowing freely.
