Households across the UK risk being hit with a fine of up to £1,000 if they don’t stay on top of their TV Licence. The warning follows concerns that missing or ignoring renewal reminder emails could leave viewers legally liable for prosecution.
When purchasing a TV Licence, you are required to provide a valid email address, which is used to send renewal reminders and updates. If your licence lapses because you missed or didn't receive an email reminder (for example, due to an out-of-date email address), you remain legally liable and can still be prosecuted.
What can lead to a fine
Simply not having a TV licence isn't illegal, but watching live TV or BBC iPlayer without one can lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 (plus court costs), or up to £2,000 in Guernsey if you are caught. The fine applies to anyone caught watching live broadcasts without a valid licence.
Licence costs and coverage
A standard colour TV Licence costs £180 per year, while a black-and-white licence is £60.50. It covers all live TV broadcasts (BBC, ITV, Sky, etc.), BBC iPlayer, and live broadcasts on streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video on any device.
How to update your details
You can update your email address or opt to receive paper reminders instead using the TV Licensing website, by calling 0300 790 6165, or by post. Changing from email to postal communications can take up to four weeks to process.
