TV Licence Refund Rules: Who Can Claim £180 Back
TV Licence Refund Rules: Who Can Claim £180 Back

TV Licensing has confirmed that some holders of the £180 TV Licence may be entitled to a refund, with payments calculated on unused months remaining on the licence.

Anyone who no longer needs a licence before it expires can request a refund, provided there is at least one full month left on it. Refunds are also available to those who qualify for the over-75 concession or the blind concession, and in these cases a claim can be made at any point regardless of how much time remains on the licence.

How Refunds Are Calculated

The TV Licensing website explains that working out precise refund amounts can be complicated, but the organisation will do the calculation for the applicant. Officials will look carefully at the information provided and confirm whether a refund can be offered and how much it will be.

For those who no longer need their licence, the refund is calculated based on when the licence was issued and when it expires. Refunds are worked out in unused months, and applicants could receive a payment for anywhere between one and 11 months, depending on their situation.

To check the licence expiry date, holders can sign in to the TV Licensing website using their licence number, name and postcode. If a claim is accepted and a refund agreed, the licence ends immediately.
