TV Licence £180 refund rules: who can claim

TV Licence holders may be entitled to a refund on their £180 payment if they meet specific rules set out by TV Licensing.

A refund can be claimed if the licence is no longer needed before it expires, provided at least one full month remains. Those qualifying for over-75 or blind concessions can apply for refunds at any point.

How refunds are calculated

A standard TV Licence costs £180 annually, with most households paying £15 monthly via Direct Debit. Refunds are calculated based on unused complete months, potentially covering one to 11 months.

You won't qualify if less than one month remains before expiry. Criteria includes no longer using TV equipment, duplicate licences, purchase errors, or death of the licence holder.

Concessions and further details

Those aged 75 or over receiving DWP Pension Credit qualify for free licences. Blind residents get 50% discounts, while eligible care home residents pay just £7.50.

TV Licensing says: "Working out precise refund amounts can be complicated. But we will do it for you." Full details are available on the TV Licensing website.
