Abuse survivor waives anonymity after partner jailed

Nicole Miller, 24, has waived her right to anonymity to speak publicly about the nine-month campaign of violence she suffered at the hands of her former partner, Elliot Bulman. Bulman, 22, of Peel Hall Road, Wythenshawe, has been jailed for 15 years.

Nicole said her life was engulfed in fear, violence, sexual abuse and control for nearly two years. She was raped, strangled and controlled by Bulman. At one point, she thought: "This is it. This is the day I die."

A campaign of abuse

Nicole struggled to speak to her friends, with her calls monitored and her conversations restricted. She initially believed her isolation was linked to her pregnancy, but by the time she became a mother, she realised something was badly wrong.

She says she showed her strength by getting out of the toxic relationship. "I want people to hear it," said Nicole. "I want people to listen to it. If I could scream it from the rooftops, I probably would."

No 10 North moves south

In other news, the Prime Minister's Manchester headquarters will be permanently moved from Heron House to First Street, half a mile south. The former Central Retail Park in Ancoats had been widely expected to become the home of Andy Burnham's northern outpost, but that is not the case.

It is hoped the permanent home of No 10 North, on the site of the former Gaythorn Gas Works, will be part of Manchester becoming the country's second centre of political power outside Westminster.

Tributes to 'The Gaffer' and a legend bows out

Tributes are pouring in for Tony Steenson, a Greater Manchester legend known for organising charity football matches. After playing football in the 1960s and 70s, he raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. Tony died aged 78 after falling ill on holiday in Portugal.

Meanwhile, Sue Kirk, a teacher at Moorside High School in Salford for 45 years, has retired. She served as a PE teacher, an English teacher, a head of year and the school's 'director of fun'. Sue counts Ryan Giggs among her former pupils and marked her retirement by leading a conga out of school.

Wednesday's weather will see a rainy start with sunny intervals later, with temperatures reaching 14C. Several road closures are in place across Greater Manchester, including the A58 in Ashton-in-Makerfield, the A627 Oldham Way, the A671 Rochdale Road in Royton, and the A6010 Alan Turing Way.
