Popular supermarket chain Trader Joe's has issued an urgent nationwide recall of its Organic Vegan Kale, Cashew & Basil Pesto stocked in stores across the United States, following the discovery of potential listeria contamination.
The recall affects products with specific lot codes and best-by dates, with customers being urged to immediately check their kitchens for the potentially dangerous items.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall specifically targets Trader Joe's Organic Vegan Kale, Cashew & Basil Pesto (SKU 005081) with best-by dates of October 10, 2024, through October 31, 2024. The products were distributed to all Trader Joe's locations nationwide.
Customers who have purchased these items are being advised to either discard them immediately or return them to any Trader Joe's store for a full refund.
The Source of Contamination
The potential contamination was identified during routine testing at the manufacturer's facility, which revealed the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. While no illnesses have been reported to date, the company is taking precautionary measures to ensure customer safety.
Listeria infection can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
What Consumers Need to Know
Symptoms of listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system, causing headaches, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
Trader Joe's has emphasized that no other products are affected by this recall and that they are working closely with their supplier and regulatory authorities to resolve the situation promptly.
Customers with questions or concerns can contact Trader Joe's Customer Relations at (626) 599-3817 for additional information about the recall.
