Topo Chico Mineral Water Faces Extended US Shortage Due to Source Upgrades
The popular mineral water brand Topo Chico, owned by beverage giant Coca-Cola, will be temporarily unavailable in the United States for an extended period, with the shortage potentially lasting several months. According to a statement from the company, this disruption is due to necessary upgrades at both the production facility and the water source located in Mexico, which will make the bottled water more difficult to obtain in the interim.
Production Pause and Quality Challenges
A letter from Coca-Cola sent to distributors, which was reviewed by CNN, revealed that the company recently identified additional challenges in the source wells, including quality issues related to the source's geology. This has led to a pause in receiving any new orders. The letter stated, We are now making further investments at the source to improve source stability and quality and enable increased production, requiring us to temporarily stop production. A spokesperson for Coca-Cola confirmed to CNN that they are planning for the mineral water to return to shelves around July, indicating a months-long gap in availability.
Historical Context and Previous Shortages
Topo Chico mineral water has been sourced from wells in Monterrey, Mexico, since the company's inception in 1895, with bottles first sold in the 1920s. This is not the first time the brand has faced a shortage in the US market; a similar situation occurred in 2022 due to high consumer demand and a shortage of raw materials. Additionally, last year, the mineral water was recalled due to the possible presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that occurs naturally in water sources. According to a letter sent to Costco customers in June 2025, the health risks from this bacteria are very low for healthy individuals, but it can cause minor health consequences in people with weakened immune systems. The recall specifically applied to bottles sold at select Costco warehouses in Texas and Louisiana from May 20 to May 29, 2025, with lot number 13A2541.
Limited Impact on Other Beverages
The company clarified in a statement that while the upgrades will affect the brand's mineral water, all other beverages produced by Topo Chico, such as its sparkling water and canned cocktails, will remain available in the United States. This means consumers can still access these alternative products during the shortage. Customers who have purchased affected water bottles from the previous recall are urged to return them to their local Costco for a full refund, with questions directed to Coca-Cola at 1-800-GET-COKE.
The ongoing upgrades aim to enhance the long-term quality and stability of Topo Chico's mineral water, but in the short term, US shoppers may need to seek alternatives or wait until later this year for its return to store shelves.
