As summer temperatures climb, making smart choices about water, gas, and electricity can lead to significant savings on your utility bills. With inflation on the rise, consumers are looking for ways to cut costs without sacrificing comfort.
Wise with Water
The average American spends 16.1 minutes in the shower, using around 32 gallons of water, costing about 70 cents per shower, according to a 2024 Harris survey and Badeloft. Reducing shower time from 16 minutes to just four minutes could save a four-person household approximately $60 per month. Additional water-saving measures include filling bathtubs with less water and avoiding running the faucet unnecessarily while brushing teeth or washing dishes.
Go Easy on the Gas
The latest inflation report shows utility gas prices are up 3% year-on-year. To combat rising costs, awareness is key. The shower is a major contributor, as 69% of Americans prefer very hot water. Lowering the water temperature from blazing hot to warm can help reduce energy costs. As Patrick Gambel, owner of General Heating & Air Conditioning, advises, being mindful of hot water and heat usage throughout the day is one of the easiest ways to save on your gas bill.
Smart Season with Thermostats
Smart thermostats connect to the internet and allow fine-tuning of temperature settings based on usage patterns. Consumer Reports notes they can save up to 8% on energy bills, translating to about $13 monthly savings based on the average May 2026 electricity bill of $163. For those without smart thermostats, setting a traditional thermostat to “Auto” and changing AC filters monthly can also save money. Gambel explains that keeping the fan on “Auto” improves system efficiency, and clean air filters enhance airflow, reducing the workload on your HVAC system.
Ice, Ice Baby: An Unconventional Trick
For those seeking additional savings, an out-of-the-ordinary cooling trick is placing a bucket or bowl of ice under a fan. This helps blow cooler air around without overusing the air conditioner. While it won’t replace your AC system, it can make a space feel cooler temporarily, according to Gambel.
