A food reviewer has declared the crème brûlée croissant from Coughlans Bakery, co-owned by comedian Romesh Ranganathan, a 'masterclass' in pastry making. The bakery, which opened in 1937, is a family-run business in Croydon that offers an extensive plant-based range.
Gerry, from the Instagram account @bitetwicefoodreviews, visited the bakery to try the viral sweet treat. In a video, he described the £3.80 croissant as 'huge' and an 'absolute goliath', praising its balance of flavours and textures. 'This is a masterclass in how you fill a croissant,' he said, noting that despite being full to the brim, it was not overly sweet or sickly.
The crème brûlée croissant, which has been trending on social media, features a creamy filling with crunchy and soft textures. Gerry called it 'the full works' and declared it Coughlans' best item. He also highlighted that the pastry was served hot, saying 'more bakeries need to be dishing out hot pastries'.
Fans of the bakery were quick to comment on the review, with many expressing surprise that the pastries are vegan. One follower said: 'Blows my mind that it's vegan too!' Another noted that almost all of Coughlans' pastries are dairy-free, which is exciting for those with milk allergies. Others shared nostalgic memories of the bakery from their childhoods.
