Richmond Tea Rooms, a quirky Alice in Wonderland-themed tea room in Manchester city centre, is offering affordable afternoon tea options starting from £12 per person, just in time for Afternoon Tea Week (August 10-16). The venue has previously been named among the 50 most Instagrammable cafes in the world.
A Manchester Staple Since 2011
Located on Sackville Street, on the edge of the Gay Village, Richmond Tea Rooms has been a fixture in the city since 2011. It originally operated on Richmond Street before moving to its current premises seven years ago.
The tea room's menu is inspired by Lewis Carroll's novel, with afternoon teas named after characters such as the Caterpillar, Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee, and the Queen of Hearts.
Afternoon Tea Options and Prices
Afternoon teas range from £12 to £45 per person. The Alice tea, at £12, includes two tea-infused scones with clotted cream and preserves, plus a pot of premium loose-leaf tea. The Wonderland Champagne Afternoon Tea, at £45, adds finger sandwiches, a canape, homemade cakes, and a glass of Champagne. Vegan and gluten-free options are available.
The Hatters Afternoon Tea, at £17 per person, is a popular choice, featuring finger sandwiches, a canape, a scone with cream and preserves, and a pot of tea. A children's version is available at £15.50, including finger sandwiches, chips, sausage roll, a scone with cream and jam, and a small milkshake.
Global Recognition and Praise
A couple of years ago, Richmond Tea Rooms was named one of the 50 most Instagrammable cafes in the world, alongside Café de Flore in Paris and Café Medi in New York. The venue was singled out for being 'quintessentially British'.
Owners Nick Curtis and Andrew Underwood previously said: “We decided to think out of the box and create a different and unique space that still kept a heavy influence from Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland.'”
Online reviews have been full of praise. One person said: “This is the loveliest afternoon tea I’ve been to and the atmosphere was great.” Another wrote: “Richmond Tea Rooms is my absolute go-to spot for afternoon tea — not just for its central location, but for its charming atmosphere and consistently delicious food.”
