Major UK Car Recall: Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall Owners Warned of Fire Risk
Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall Recall: Fire Risk Alert for Drivers

Drivers of Peugeot, Citroen, and Vauxhall vehicles are being issued an urgent 'do not ignore' alert regarding a critical fire risk fault. Tens of thousands of car owners across the United Kingdom have been warned that their automobiles may pose a significant safety hazard due to a recently identified mechanical issue.

BBC Expert Issues Stern Warning to Affected Motorists

During a recent episode of BBC One's Morning Live, consumer expert Louise Minchin delivered a stark message to owners of the impacted vehicles. She emphasised that drivers must not panic but should absolutely not disregard any recall notifications they receive. "If your car seems to be running perfectly, it could still be affected by a recall," Minchin cautioned, highlighting the silent nature of this particular defect.

Scope of the Major Automotive Recall

Global automotive giant Stellantis has initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 44,000 vehicles in the UK this month. The company, which owns multiple car brands including Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, and DS Automobiles, identified a fault that could potentially lead to vehicles catching fire. The recall affects select models produced between 2023 and 2026 across several marques under the Stellantis umbrella.

Key vehicle models involved in this safety campaign include:

  • Peugeot: 208, 308, 2008, Rifter, Partner, Expert
  • Citroen: C3, C3 Aircross, C4, C4 X, Berlingo, Dispatch
  • Vauxhall: Corsa, Mokka, Frontera
  • DS Automobiles: DS 3 Crossback, DS 4, DS 7

Other affected brands within the Stellantis portfolio include Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, and Fiat, though specific models for these were not detailed in the initial announcement.

Technical Fault Behind the Fire Hazard

The recall centres on an insufficient clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the pole protection cup of the 48-volt belt starter generator. According to Stellantis engineers, under specific wet conditions, contact between these components could occur, potentially allowing water to infiltrate the engine bay. In what the manufacturer describes as a 'worst-case scenario', this intrusion could create a 'potential risk of fire in the engine department'.

Manufacturer's Response and Repair Process

In an official statement, Stellantis declared: "Having customer safety and satisfaction at the core of its values, Stellantis is voluntarily recalling an estimated 44,000 vehicles in the UK due to a potential issue concerning the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the belt starter generator."

The company has committed to immediately contacting all affected vehicle owners, instructing them to schedule an appointment with their authorised dealer. The corrective procedure involves replacing the existing pole protection cup of the 48V belt starter generator with a new component featuring higher insulation properties. Additionally, technicians will meticulously check and, if required, adjust the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the BSG unit.

This essential safety service is estimated to take approximately 30 minutes and will be performed completely free of charge to the vehicle owner. Stellantis has confirmed that the repair obligation stands regardless of the car's age, current owner, or warranty status.

Consumer Advice and Verification Steps

Louise Minchin provided clear guidance for concerned drivers, stating: "If you have been contacted, don't ignore it, you need to do something about it straight away. Get in touch with the manufacturer. Most of the time it can be a really simple fix. The one at the moment is only about 30 minutes or so."

She reinforced that these safety recalls are the manufacturer's responsibility and are not dependent on where the car was purchased. "They absolutely need to be done. Do not ignore it, that'd be my main advice," Minchin concluded.

For motorists unsure whether their vehicle is included in this or any other recall, the UK government provides an official online recall checker on the Gov.uk website. By entering their car's registration number into the tool, owners can instantly verify if their vehicle is subject to any outstanding safety notices.
