Supermarket own brands have emerged victorious in a recent blind taste test of sausages conducted by consumer champion Which?. The trial pitted 10 supermarket own-brand sausages against premium labels The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites, with 60 participants scoring based on flavour, texture and aroma.
Top Three Best Buys
Three sausages secured Which?'s Best Buy award, all of which are own-brand products. Lidl Deluxe Pork Sausages (£2.49 for 400g) achieved a score of 73%, praised for their "eating pleasure", moistness, texture and price. Aldi Specially Selected Pork Sausages followed closely with 72%, described as "impressive all-rounders" and priced at £2.49 for 400g. Morrisons' The Best Thick Pork Sausages also scored 72%, retailing at £3.25 for 400g, with most tasters satisfied with their appearance, aroma and taste.
Other Contenders
Asda claimed fourth place, with testers commending the meaty flavour and spot-on seasoning. Two thirds of participants also enjoyed the texture. At £3.17 for 400g (79p per 100g), they offer good value. The Co-op sausages performed well too, costing £3.90 for 400g (98p per 100g), though some tasters felt they could benefit from slightly more flavour.
Premium Brands Fall Short
The Jolly Hog and Porky Whities, despite their appealing appearance and aroma, failed to top the chart. The Jolly Hog scored 65%, let down by lacklustre flavour and a texture deemed "too coarse". Porky Whites also scored 65%, with fewer than half of testers satisfied with the texture. While they looked the part, the taste left much to be desired.
