Nexgrill has initiated a major voluntary recall of more than 10.2 million metal-wire bristle grill brushes sold through Home Depot, following alarming reports of detached bristles posing a severe ingestion hazard. The recall, announced on Thursday, comes after multiple incidents where consumers required medical attention due to swallowed bristles, highlighting a critical safety issue with these popular cleaning tools.
Serious Internal Injury Risk Prompts Action
The manufacturer has explicitly warned that small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes during use, potentially sticking to grill surfaces or food. This defect creates a significant risk of ingestion, which could lead to serious internal injuries necessitating surgical intervention. So far, authorities have documented at least 68 cases of bristle detachment, with five reports of consumers seeking medical treatment to remove bristles from their digestive tracts or throats.
Affected Models and Identification
Six specific models of Nexgrill grill brushes are included in this extensive recall. The affected products are the 19-inch grill brush (model number 530-0024), the grill cleaning brush with scraper (530-0024G), the long handle grill brush (530-0034), the grill brush and scraper (530-0039), the grill brush with scrub pad (530-0041), and the wood handle grill brush (530-0042).
All recalled brushes feature a metal wire bristle brush attached to either a black plastic handle or a bamboo wood handle. Consumers can identify Nexgrill products by looking for the Nexgrill logo on the plastic handle or stamped on the back of the bamboo handle. Products without this branding are not subject to this recall.
Sales Details and Refund Process
The potentially hazardous brushes were sold both in Home Depot stores and online via the retailer's website from 2015 through 2026, with prices ranging from $5 to $15. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has advised consumers to immediately cease using these recalled grill brushes and contact Nexgrill to arrange a full refund.
The refund will be issued as a gift card valued between $5 and $15, depending on the specific model purchased. To register for the recall, consumers must obtain a registration code from Nexgrill, then upload a photograph of their grill brush showing both the code and their initials to the designated recall website.
Once registration is successfully processed and confirmed via email, consumers will receive detailed instructions for proper disposal of the recalled brush. Nexgrill emphasizes that consumers should dispose of these brushes even if they appear to be in good condition, as the detachment risk may not be immediately visible.
Manufacturer's Safety Commitment
In an official statement, Nexgrill reiterated that safety remains their top priority in all product development. "Our goal in producing grill brushes is simple: providing customers with a safe method to clean and maintain their grills as they enjoy the All-American BBQ tradition with family and friends," the company stated.
The manufacturer further emphasized their commitment to customer safety through clear usage instructions, including examining brushes before each use, discarding any brush with loose bristles, and ensuring cooking surfaces are completely free of loose bristles before beginning food preparation.
This recall represents one of the largest consumer product safety actions in recent years, affecting millions of households across the United States. Consumers who purchased these products through Home Depot are urged to take immediate action to protect themselves and their families from potential harm.
