A mother from Wareham, Dorset, has issued a warning to Tesco shoppers after discovering maggots in two jars of bolognese sauce. Rosina James purchased the sauce from Tesco Extra in Poole and only noticed the infestation when she began cooking on Monday.
Ms James told DorsetLive that she poured a small amount into a saucepan and saw something unusual. After posting on Facebook, a friend suggested examining the creatures, which turned out to be fly larvae. She immediately contacted Tesco but was told a recall could not be issued until the jar was returned to the store.
“They’re dead in the jar, but it really does put you off your food,” Ms James said. “I’ve asked Tesco to recall it, I don’t want compensation, I’m asking that they make sure no one’s kids eat that.” Another woman has since reported a similar issue with the same product.
A Tesco spokesperson apologised and said: “The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority and we are investigating this as a priority with our supplier.” BCP Council confirmed it is investigating the complaint.
