HMRC confirms September dates for pension tax refunds

HMRC has issued an update on the timing of pension tax refunds, confirming that claims received by 22 May 2026 are currently being processed, with replies expected by 27 September 2026.

The update follows a customer's query on social media on August 7, who was waiting for a P55 tax refund that had been approved three weeks earlier but was told payment could take another eight weeks. The P55 form is used to claim back tax on a flexibly accessed pension payment, provided the pension pot has not been emptied, no further payments are planned before the end of the tax year, and the pension provider cannot make the refund itself.

HMRC response to customer query

HMRC initially asked when the claim was submitted and whether it was done online or by post. The customer said it was submitted online on June 29. HMRC then explained that it could only provide general advice on social media regarding timings, and shared a link to a Government website tool that shows processing dates.
