Households can save money on energy bills by switching on their heating for short bursts at specific times each day, according to a heating expert. Stephen Hankinson, heating expert at Electric Radiators Direct, suggests running the heating for a brief period in the morning and again in the evening rather than leaving it on all day.
Best times to switch on the heating
Hankinson explained that the coldest time of the day is typically shortly after sunrise, when the rays are weak. He recommends switching the heating on for a short burst between 6.30am and 7.30am to take the edge off the chill as people get out of bed, without wasting energy by running it for too long.
In the evenings, the best time to put the heating on is usually between 5pm and 9pm, when most people are back at home and temperatures naturally start to fall. He also recommends keeping the thermostat set to around 18°C to 21°C, rather than adjusting it throughout the day.
Exceptions for condensation and north-facing homes
While this method will work for most homes, Hankinson noted that those struggling with condensation may benefit from running the heating more frequently. He said: "In this case, keeping the heating on at a steady level throughout the day is wise, as condensation is less likely to build on warm surfaces such as walls and windows."
He added that north-facing homes may also need more heating, as they receive less sunlight. The advice comes as temperatures continue to fall across the UK, with the NHS suggesting that once temperatures drop below 15°C, it is a good idea to start heating the home.
