Google has confirmed that it will end support for sending emails via third-party accounts in Gmail, a feature that has been available to billions of users for years. The change will take effect in January 2027.
Key Changes Announced
The 'Send as' feature, which allows users to send messages from separate email accounts such as Yahoo, Outlook, and Hotmail directly through Gmail, will be discontinued. Google also plans to end support for Gmailify, a service that brings Gmail features like spam protection and inbox organisation to third-party email accounts.
Google explained the decision in a statement: "In our ongoing commitment to ensuring Gmail remains secure, smart, and easy-to-use, we occasionally have the difficult choice to discontinue features that require disproportionate maintenance resources."
Timeline for Changes
The transition will occur in phases. In Q3 2026, Google will announce the change and begin a notice period, with in-product notifications for affected users. During Q3–Q4 2026, the features will continue to work, but new configurations may be restricted. By January 2027, Gmail will fully remove 'Send as' for third-party accounts, Gmailify, and POP.
Users are encouraged to migrate their settings during the transition period to avoid disruption.
