Fife woman quits UK for Malta where fuel is £1 cheaper a litre

A Scottish woman who relocated to Malta says diesel there costs less than half the price it does in the UK, prompting her to brand Britain a 'rip off'. Laura Anderson, 42, spent her entire life in Scotland before settling on the Mediterranean island, where fuel prices have left her shocked.

Fuel price comparison shocks new arrival

While walking her dogs on October 4, Laura spotted diesel priced at £1.03 (€1.21) per litre. During her drive to Heathrow Airport to begin her new life, the business owner observed diesel costing £2.22 per litre. She also saw unleaded petrol at £1.13 (€1.34) versus approximately £1.74 per litre back home.

"I was shocked to see the price difference," Laura, originally from Fife, said. "I've moved to Malta partly for the weather, and partly because I feel the UK is becoming too expensive." She added: "When we were driving down to Heathrow, diesel was £2.22 compared to €1.21. What is going on in the UK? Rip off. That's over £1 more expensive per litre."

Heating costs also cited

Laura also highlighted the cost of heating her former Scottish farmhouse. "I lived on a farm in Scotland and kerosene heating oil is £1.11 per litre. That means my house would cost over £500 per month for heating in the winter not including firewood or electricity," she said.

Online reaction and overall cost comparison

The footage has attracted significant attention online, amassing over 180,000 views. One person commented: "UK is rip off central." Another viewer observed: "Soon be worth driving to Malta to fill up." A third remarked: "Because the British government loves tax." Someone else quipped: "Bring me some back." Another declared: "It's our greedy government."

According to the website My Life Elsewhere, the UK is 27 per cent more expensive than Malta overall, though groceries in the UK are 6 per cent cheaper.
