Warning to Brits: Halloween Decorations Could Attract Rats and Spiders

As Halloween approaches, experts are warning that popular decorations such as carved pumpkins, bright porch lights, and fake spider webs could turn homes into magnets for rodents and insects. The sweet smell of pumpkins and illuminated entrances can attract rats, spiders, and flying insects, leading to unwanted infestations.

According to Quote My Wall, a spokesman said: 'Halloween is all about thrills and chills, but a rodent infestation isn't the kind of scare anyone wants.' They recommend bringing carved pumpkins indoors overnight, switching to warm or yellow LED bulbs, and avoiding outdoor fake webs to deter pests.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) warns that rodents can spread disease and enter homes through tiny gaps. Dr Jim Fredericks, Senior Vice President, stated: 'They don't care about the state of your home – if there's food and shelter, they'll try to move in.' Sealing entry points, decluttering, and regular inspections are advised.

This warning follows a bumper acorn season in the UK, which has led to a surge in rat activity. Pest controllers report catching rodents over 20 inches long amid a 'horrendous infestation'. Rats are highly social and can bond with humans, but their presence poses health risks.
