Drivers Learn Meaning of 'Dangerous' Road Sign from Theory Test Expert
Drivers Finally Learn What This 'Dangerous' Road Sign Means

Drivers are only just learning the meaning of a common road sign that often appears on what are described as 'dangerous' streets. Understanding road signs is essential for safety behind the wheel, according to a theory test examiner who has explained the symbol.

What Does the Triangular Warning Sign Mean?

Annie, known as the Theory Test Practice on social media, has alerted motorists to the meaning of a triangular warning sign that features a car with stones flying up from its tyres. Speaking with her 1.2 million followers on TikTok, she explained: 'Do you know what this sign means? Look at the tyres, you can see there's bits of stone flying up from the tyres and that's because it's warning you loose chippings.'

'So loose chippings – look at the road surface – it's quite gravelly, it's quite stony. So if you drive over that too fast, then those chippings are going to hit your car, hit your windscreen, and it's also much more of a skid risk,' she added.

Speed Limits and Loose Chippings

Annie advised that the sign also indicates drivers should keep within the 20mph speed limit. 'You might want to go slower than that when those loose chippings have just been laid. When they're embedded into the tarmac, you might want to go faster than that because this is a recommended speed limit,' she said.

Finishing the post, Annie stated: 'So I'm hoping you now understand what this sign means. It's a triangle sign, it's a warning sign. It's warning you to be careful, this is not a really great surface to drive on.'

UK Road Signs: Categories and Meanings

According to GOV.UK, road signs are categorised by shape and colour to indicate their purpose. Circles give orders, triangles provide warnings, and rectangles show information. The most common signs include the maximum speed limit and national speed limit. No entry signs, which are a red circle with a white horizontal bar, are also important. Give way signs (an inverted white triangle with a red border) and stop signs (an octagonal sign requiring a complete halt) are crucial too.
