Spring Cleaning Secrets: The Eight Overlooked Spots That Transform Your Home

As spring arrives with its promise of Easter celebrations and brighter weather, it also heralds the annual tradition of thorough home cleaning. According to Lynsey Crombie, renowned as the 'Queen of Clean' and a regular expert on ITV's This Morning, many households focus on obvious tasks while neglecting crucial hidden areas that accumulate dust and grime.

The Hidden Cleaning Blind Spots You're Probably Missing

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Crombie explained: 'Most people concentrate on visible surfaces like wiping counters, vacuuming floors, and organising cupboards. However, numerous concealed spots quietly gather dirt that we consistently overlook.' She emphasised that these 'blind spots' might not be immediately noticeable but addressing them significantly enhances how clean and fresh your living environment feels.

'The positive aspect is that once you identify these areas, most require just a few minutes to properly clean,' Crombie added. Below are her eight most commonly neglected cleaning zones that deserve attention on your spring cleaning checklist.

1. The Bottom of Your Laundry Basket

While emptying dirty clothes receives attention, Crombie warns that the laundry basket itself needs regular cleaning. 'Your basket constantly holds worn garments, damp towels, and sports equipment, yet its base is rarely sanitised. Over time, it collects lint, dust, and bacteria from soiled laundry,' she noted.

Solution: Empty the basket completely, then wipe the interior with antibacterial spray or warm soapy water, allowing it to dry thoroughly before reuse. Fabric laundry bags can typically be machine-washed directly. For mould marks, pre-treat with white vinegar before laundering.

2. Behind and Under Furniture

This might seem obvious, but Crombie identifies this as a frequent oversight. 'One of the biggest blind spots in most homes is behind sofas, cabinets, and beds. Dust, crumbs, and pet hair accumulate rapidly here, potentially affecting room air quality without our awareness,' she explained.

Solution: Ideally, move furniture out several times annually for proper vacuuming. For quicker maintenance, use a vacuum crevice tool or flat-headed duster along edges to remove hidden dirt.

3. Around the Base of the Toilet

Crombie continued: 'Most individuals clean the toilet bowl and seat but forget the base and surrounding floor area. This zone can harbour splashes, dust, and bacteria unnoticed.'

Solution: A swift wipe around the toilet base and adjacent flooring with antibacterial cleaner instantly elevates bathroom hygiene.

4. Under the Bed

In bedrooms, Crombie highlights the area beneath the bed as critical. 'Under the bed is another dust magnet easily ignored. Dust, fluff, and forgotten items accumulate quickly, especially if used for storage,' she said.

Solution: Use a long-handled duster or vacuum attachment for efficient cleaning. Clearing this space improves airflow and reduces allergens, particularly beneficial for those with dust sensitivities.

5. The Back of the Refrigerator

While fridge shelves get wiped, Crombie stresses the importance of the rear section. 'The back of the fridge is rarely inspected but can gather substantial dust around coils and vents. This buildup may impair appliance efficiency,' she explained.

Solution: Carefully pull the refrigerator out and vacuum or wipe the back. This removes concealed dust and can enhance operational efficiency.

6. Light Bulbs and Light Fittings

Crombie noted: 'Light bulbs and fittings accumulate dust over time, which can dim room brightness without us understanding why the space feels slightly gloomy.'

Solution: Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth or brush dust away using a recycled makeup brush. Ensure lights are switched off and completely cool before cleaning.

7. Kitchen Cupboard Doors and Handles

When deep cleaning kitchens, Crombie emphasises cupboard doors and handles. 'We tend to focus on worktops and sinks, but cupboard doors and handles collect daily grease and fingerprints,' she said.

Solution: Use a warm cloth with washing-up liquid to cut through buildup quickly. While cleaning, empty and sanitise utensil drawers as well.

8. The Top Edges of Appliances

Crombie's final advice targets out-of-sight areas. 'The tops of fridges, microwaves, and kitchen cabinets are classic 'out of sight, out of mind' zones. Grease, dust, and cooking residue settle here over months,' she described.

Solution: During spring cleaning, a quick wipe with a degreasing cloth removes months of buildup in seconds, preventing grime from drifting onto other surfaces.

By incorporating these eight often-overlooked areas into your spring cleaning routine, you can achieve a noticeably fresher, more hygienic home environment that truly sparkles throughout the season.
