Cleaning your vacuum filter once a month in a 10-minute task can restore suction power and prevent dust from settling in your home this autumn. A clogged filter blocks airflow, weakening suction and straining the motor, so no amount of hoovering will pick up dust effectively.
Why Autumn Makes Filters Clog Faster
As temperatures drop in October, homes become dustier because windows stay shut and heating is switched on. This combination causes dust to accumulate rapidly, making vacuum filters more prone to blockages at this time of year.
Vacuum filters only need cleaning once a month to function properly, but neglecting them can cause accumulated dust to overheat the filter, damaging it and reducing the vacuum's lifespan. Regular cleaning also saves money over time.
Signs Your Filter Needs Cleaning
Leslie Murray from vacuum manufacturer My Heny said it "only takes a few minutes" to clean a filter, saving you from wasting time on an ineffective clean. She added: "More loose dust escaping, louder motor sounds, or weaker suction can all indicate that your filter needs to be cleaned. They're often caused by dirt buildups blocking airflow. Thoroughly cleaning the filters should restore your vacuum's performance to its original state."
How to Clean a Vacuum Filter
Start by unplugging the vacuum and ensuring it is completely switched off. Carefully remove the filter, then gently tap it over a bin or use a soft cloth to shake off loose dust.
The filter typically looks like a small cover near the dust container. On cordless models, it is usually inside the container; on older vacuums, it is often on top of or beneath it. Running the filter under lukewarm water can remove finer dust particles, but check the vacuum's instructions first, as some filters are not washable.
If the filter is water-safe, leave it somewhere secure for at least 24 hours after rinsing to ensure it is fully dry before reinstalling. Cleaning the filter takes no more than 10 minutes and is one of the most effective ways to keep your vacuum performing at its best.
