With Valentine's Day approaching, shoppers can still find affordable red roses under £5 if they know where to look. The team at MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) compared prices for traditional bunches of red roses at nine major UK supermarkets.
The most expensive bouquets are at Waitrose and Marks & Spencer, both charging £15. Asda follows at £10, while Co-op offers roses for £8. Sainsbury's and Tesco both sell bunches for £6.
For those seeking cheaper options, Morrisons has a bunch of 12 roses for £4.50, reduced to £3.47 with a More Card. Lidl's bouquet costs £3.99, dropping to £3.45 for Lidl Plus members. However, the cheapest overall is Aldi, selling a bunch of red roses for £3.45 with no loyalty card required.
MSE noted that prices exclude premium ranges, such as long-stemmed or ethically sourced roses. A spokesperson suggested alternatives like tulips and advised dressing up budget flowers with attractive paper and a personal poem to impress a loved one.
The red rose remains the quintessential symbol of love, with roots in ancient Greek mythology linking it to Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Different colours convey different meanings: pink roses signify admiration, while yellow roses are more suitable for friends.
