A comprehensive survey of 2,000 British adults has unveiled a fascinating desire to escape the mundane and take charge of fictional enterprises from popular culture. Despite the dramatic and often perilous events depicted in soap operas, pubs from EastEnders, Emmerdale, and Coronation Street ranked highly among the businesses Brits would love to run.
Soap Opera Pubs Dominate the Rankings
In a study commissioned by business insurance specialists Premierline, EastEnders' iconic Queen Vic pub secured votes from 10% of respondents, narrowly beating Emmerdale's Woolpack at 9% and Coronation Street's Rovers Return at 8%. This preference persists despite these establishments being fictional hotspots for murders, affairs, explosions, fires, floods, and even plane crashes in their respective storylines.
Top Choices for Fictional Business Ownership
The nation's top choice, however, was Wonka Industries from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, garnering a substantial 18% of votes. Following closely was Central Perk from the beloved sitcom Friends at 17%. Notably, 12% of respondents expressed interest in managing Fawlty Towers, the chaotic hotel from the classic comedy, or Stark Industries from the Iron Man franchise.
Other notable entries on the list included:
- Trotters Independent Trading from Only Fools and Horses (10%)
- The White Lotus from the eponymous series (7%)
- Scoops Ahoy from Stranger Things (7%)
- Agence Grateau from Emily in Paris (5%)
Motivations Behind the Fantasy
When questioned about their motivations, 37% of Brits believed running such a business "would be a laugh," while over a quarter (27%) confessed they'd welcome the drama. Additionally, one in ten (11%) felt they could outperform the existing fictional manager. A spokesperson from Premierline commented on the findings, noting that these fictional businesses are appealing because they are familiar, community-driven, and feel like workplaces people already understand from television.
Real-World Business Realities
The spokesperson also highlighted the stark contrast between fantasy and reality, emphasizing that running a pub, shop, or hospitality business involves managing serious risks such as property damage, public liability, staff illness, theft, and cash-flow shocks. Without proper insurance, even minor incidents can lead to significant financial setbacks.
Entrepreneurial Aspirations and Job Dissatisfaction
The survey delved deeper into Brits' current job satisfaction and entrepreneurial dreams. Remarkably, 74% of respondents revealed they would quit their current position immediately to take charge of one of these fictional firms. Furthermore, 65% expressed a desire to become their own boss eventually, with 10% prepared to leave their jobs soon to launch a venture.
Additional findings include:
- 20% have considered drafting a business plan but haven't managed to do so yet
- 27% love their current role
- A mere 2% claim they live for their job
- 6% admit they detest their job and are eager to leave
Practical Considerations for Aspiring Business Owners
The Premierline representative added that while many Brits dream of starting their own business for freedom, flexibility, and turning passion into sustainability, the practical aspects are often overlooked. Protecting equipment and premises with the right insurance can be crucial in preventing minor setbacks from becoming major financial hits.
The survey also found that 9% of Brits have gone as far as sketching out a business plan for an on-screen venture, and nearly a third (29%) have invested considerable time pondering how they'd run a fictional enterprise.
