A Scottish woman has left the UK to escape the cost-of-living crisis, saying the country has become "a rip off". Laura Anderson, 42, has moved to Malta, where she says diesel is less than half the price it is in the UK.
Fuel price shock
Laura said the constant rise in day-to-day costs in the UK pushed her over the edge, and after spending her whole life living in Scotland, she decided to make a leap of faith and move to Malta. Now just a week into her new life on the Mediterranean island, Laura says the price of fuel has blown her away.
Laura, from Fife, Scotland, told NeedToKnow: "I was shocked to see the price difference. I’ve moved to Malta partly for the weather, and partly because I feel the UK is becoming too expensive."
Price comparison
Whilst walking her dogs around her new neighbourhood on October 4, Laura noticed diesel was priced at just £1.03 (€1.21) per litre. When travelling down to Heathrow Airport to start her new life, the business owner noticed that diesel cost her a whopping £2.22 per litre. Laura even clocked that unleaded petrol was £1.13 (€1.34) compared to around £1.74 per litre in the UK.
She said: "When we were driving down to Heathrow, diesel was £2.22 compared to €1.21. What is going on in the UK, rip off. That’s over £1 more expensive per litre. I lived on a farm in Scotland and kerosene heating oil is £1.11 per litre.
Viral reaction
"That means my house would cost over £500 per month for heating in the winter not including firewood or electricity." She shared a video online in a clip that quickly went viral, with over 180,000 views and some envious Brits in the comments.
