The Crofters pub in Bradshaw, Bolton, has reversed its card-only payment policy after the decision sparked a fierce debate among customers.
Initial decision and reasons
Bosses at The Crofters made the card-only decision in June after staff reported receiving counterfeit notes, which managers said had caused 'significant issues'. At the time, the owners said the decision 'was not made lightly' but was done to 'protect [their] team and continue providing the service [customers] expect'.
While some praised the move, others were critical. One customer said: “Sorry, lost my custom.” Another wrote: "What a way to push the local punters out." Others commented: "It's a no from me I'm afraid," "All pubs should accept cash," and "There should always be a choice."
U-turn and response
Earlier this week, the pub announced that they had 'listened' to the feedback and 'made a U-turn' with their policy, now accepting cash payments again in addition to cards.
In a statement, the team at The Crofters wrote: "We're back to taking cash at The Crofters! Thank you all for your patience and understanding while we trialled being card only. We've listened to your feedback, completed additional staff training on identifying counterfeit notes, and we're pleased to say that we're now accepting cash again! Cash truly is king!"
Customers responded positively, with one saying: "Glad you have seen the light, might pop in for a pint now." Another wrote: "Common sense prevails, well done for listening to your customers." One other said: "About time as well we will definitely come back."
One person also defended the original decision, writing: "For those that are commenting about the fact that it shouldn’t have been stopped in the first place should understand how much businesses lose when scroats use fake notes. The fakes are so well made they look real. Now businesses have to spend a small fortune on machines to check notes."
