The Barefoot Investor, Scott Pape, has delivered what he calls the 'brutal truth' to an Australian mother who confessed to covering her husband's gambling debts for years. Writing to Pape anonymously, the 49-year-old woman revealed she has paid nearly $100,000 over four years to service losses from her husband's gambling addiction.
Despite these payments, she stated that her husband still owes $55,000 on a personal loan and is demanding an additional $6,000 immediately. The woman expressed suspicion that the true figure could be higher, as her husband refuses to provide evidence of where the money went. 'My salary goes into the offset account but he keeps his account separate,' she wrote. 'If I don't pay his debts, he stops paying for groceries and stops contributing to the mortgage.'
She also shared fears for her own and her son's emotional and financial wellbeing, adding that she lacks the support to separate from her husband. In his response published in The Herald Sun, Pape expressed sympathy for how 'exhausted' the woman must feel. 'Here's the brutal truth: this isn't over. It won't stop until he puts his hand up and gets help,' he said.
Pape's Advice: Be Ruthless
Pape described gambling as a 'disease designed to take every cent' and warned that as long as the woman continues to cover her husband's bills, the stress will persist for their family. He advised: 'It's time to be ruthless. For your son. Do not pay another dollar towards your husband's gambling debts. Do not give him any money. Pay the bills yourself.' After making that decision, Pape recommended she work with a financial counsellor to develop a plan, and he offered to help personally. He also urged her to consult a family lawyer to explore her options for the marriage's future.
A Long Recovery Ahead
Pape emphasised that recovery from the financial stress would be a lengthy process. 'Hope is not a strategy. You've carried this for four years. That has to stop,' he concluded. The National Debt Helpline is available at 1800 007 007 for those needing support.
