Banks Offer £100 Cash, Railcard Deals to Attract Freshers

Students preparing to start college or university are being offered up to £100 in free cash, food vouchers worth £120, and a free four-year Railcard as banks compete to attract freshers.

Incentives for 2026

The latest comparison from Moneyfactscompare.co.uk shows major banks and building societies have refreshed their student current account offers for the 2026 academic year, with incentives including cashback, takeaway vouchers, travel discounts, and interest-free overdrafts.

Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland are both offering £100 in cash to eligible new student account holders who pay in £500 between July 30 and October 30. Lloyds customers can also earn up to £120 in Deliveroo vouchers by meeting monthly spending conditions.

Other Offers

Nationwide Building Society is offering £100 cashback alongside £120 of Just Eat vouchers for eligible students opening a FlexStudent account before December 11.

NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland are each offering £100 cashback together with a four-year tastecard membership, which provides discounts at restaurants as well as entertainment and shopping offers.

Students travelling regularly between university and home may prefer Santander's Edge Student Current Account, which includes a free four-year 16-25 Railcard worth around £115 and access to Santander Boosts cashback offers.

Overdraft Options

For those expecting to rely on an overdraft during their studies, Moneyfacts said NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland currently offer the most generous interest-free facilities, rising to £3,250 by the end of a degree, subject to eligibility.

HSBC and Nationwide also offer interest-free overdrafts of up to £3,000 over the course of a degree.

Advice for Students

Caitlyn Eastell, personal finance analyst at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said students should look beyond welcome incentives before choosing an account.

She said: "Free cash and vouchers can make one student account stand out from another, but it's important students compare the overall package before being swayed by incentives. An interest-free overdraft could provide greater value over the course of a degree than a one-off freebie."

She added that budgeting tools available through banking apps can also help students manage their finances, while university support services may be available for those struggling with money.

Moneyfacts said students should think about which incentives they are most likely to use, whether that's travel discounts, food offers, or cashback, while also considering overdraft limits, overseas card use, and other everyday banking features before opening an account.
