The system, which requires Britons to register fingerprints and have a photo taken when entering most EU countries, also applies on the return journey. While each check is quick, queues build when hundreds of passengers arrive at once.
Plan around peak times
Travel experts say thinking ahead can prevent disruption during the busiest weeks of the holiday season. Pre-planning before leaving home and allowing extra time at the airport can make a real difference.
Kate Pasola, writing for consumer group Which?, suggests choosing less crowded flights. Early morning or quieter departures often mean shorter waits at passport control. Passengers are also advised to study the airport layout before travelling, particularly locating passport control for the flight home, which could save valuable time if queues start to form.
Move to the gate early
Another tip is not to linger in the departure lounge once the gate number appears on screens. Arriving promptly gives extra time to pass through border checks if the process is slow.
Having flexible rather than fixed tickets for connecting trains, buses or ferries can also reduce stress, allowing plans to be adjusted if a long wait means a missed departure. The same applies to excursions or attractions booked for the same afternoon after a morning landing; choosing the next day could prove more relaxing.
Hire cars and airport parking
Those collecting a hire car should keep the rental company informed of any delay. Sending a flight number before travel allows the firm to track the arrival, and a quick phone call or email can mitigate problems.
Drivers using airport parking should check their booking terms before setting off. Some operators allow a short grace period if someone is late returning, while others may charge extra for an overstay.
