Aldi is trialling earlier closing times in 97 stores, with these branches now shutting at 9pm instead of 10pm. The change took effect in July, following a similar move earlier this year when around 50 branches adopted a 9pm close.
Signs have been placed in affected stores to inform customers, and Aldi will review feedback before deciding whether to make the change permanent. The stores selected for the trial are understood to be those with lower footfall during the final trading hour.
Most stores unaffected
Aldi operates more than 1,080 stores across the UK, so the majority will continue to close at 10pm from Monday to Saturday. Most branches shut at 4pm on Sundays due to trading laws.
A spokesperson for Aldi said: “As the UK’s cheapest supermarket, our commitment to customers is that they will always pay the lowest possible prices every time they shop with us. Our efficient business model means that we are always looking for new ways to pass on even greater savings to Aldi shoppers.”
Expansion and upgrades
The trial comes as Aldi prepares to open 16 new stores in the coming months, with locations already announced. The supermarket will also upgrade 25 stores across the UK, introducing more shopping space and sustainable features such as energy-efficient fridge doors. Bakery, health and beauty, and fresh food areas will be improved in selected locations, with changes varying by store.
