Tesco Reveals Simple Freezer Hack to Keep Bananas Fresh Longer

Bananas are notorious for ripening quickly, often developing brown spots and turning black within days. This rapid spoilage leads to food waste and wasted money for many UK households. However, Tesco has shared a straightforward storage trick that can dramatically extend the life of this popular fruit.

The supermarket's advice is simple: freeze your bananas. According to Tesco's website, freezers work most efficiently when full, so using them to store bananas helps reduce food waste and keeps ingredients ready for use. Courtney Pallett, Tesco campaigns manager, said: 'Your freezer is your friend when it comes to reducing food waste and avoiding throwing food away. Most of the foods that often end up in the bin such as bananas and avocados can be saved by freezing them to use later.'

Tesco recommends peeling ripe bananas and freezing them whole or in slices. These can be used straight from the freezer, perfect for smoothies or snacking. Some people prefer to freeze bananas unpeeled, peeling them after removal from the freezer.

Food influencer Lisa Bryan (@downshiftology) has endorsed the method, sharing her own tips. She freezes bananas in halves for single-serving smoothies, slices them for baking, or mashes them into ice cube trays for banana bread. After a few hours, the frozen pieces can be transferred to resealable bags for long-term storage.
